Twitch have stated that friends will soon be removed from the platform: “The feature will be removed from the mobile app on May 16, and Twitch.tv on May 25, 2022. After that date, your Friends list and the ability to see which of your Friends are online will no longer be available.“
Twitch has a friends feature so you can communicate with your friends or people you meet in chat through direct message. This is a great feature if you want to chat privately with a friend while watching a stream or even if you want to connect with someone you met in chat to play a game.
In this article we are going to cover how to use the friends feature, how to add friends on twitch and how to block someone on Twitch if they are bothering you. Let’s jump in and get started.
How To Add A Friend On Twitch
There are two ways to add a friend on Twitch. I have outlined both of them below.
Method 1 – Add A Friend From Search
If you want to add a friend and know their Twitch username, this is the easiest way to add them.
- Go to Twitch.tv and navigate to the bottom left hand corner
- Here you will see a small bar which says “Search To Add Friends”
- Type your friends username in the bar
- When you see your friends account in the list hover over their name and click the little add friend icon
- You have now sent a friend request to that person and they will have to accept your request. Once they accept you will become friends on Twitch
Method 2 – Add A Friend From Chat
On Twitch you also have the ability to add someone directly from a Twitch chat. If you are in your favourite streamers chat and have started talking to someone in there regularly you can add them as a friend. To do this follow the steps below:
- When you are in chat click on the persons username that you want to add as a friend. You will see the screen below.
- Click on the add friend button. This will send a request to the person so they can accept it. Once they have accepted you will become friends on Twitch.
How To Join A Friend On Twitch
On the left hand side of your Twitch home screen you will see Followed Channels, Recommended channels and online friends. If you scroll down to the online friends section you will see your friends that are online.
If you hover over their name you will see a join button. When you click on the join button you will join the same stream as them. You can now watch the stream together.
How To Remove A Friend On Twitch
If for some reason you want to remove a friend on Twitch you can. To do this follow the steps below:
- Go to Twitch.tv and click on your profile image in the top right hand corner
- From the drop down menu select friends
- Here you will see all of your friends on Twitch. Find the one you are looking to unfriend. Hover over the green button in the left hand corner that says “Friends”. When you hover it will change to red and say “Unfriend”.
- Click Unfriend to remove the person from your friend list on Twitch
How To Message A Friend On Twitch
Twitch has a built in private messaging system. This is great if you want to chat in private with someone while watching the same stream. Chat on Twitch is called whispers.
To whisper to someone find them in your online friends section on the left hand side of Twitch. Hover over their name and click on “Whisper”.
When you click on whisper a chat box will open where you can start chatting to your friend. It’s as easy as that.
How To Block Someone On Twitch
If someone is annoying or harassing you on Twitch you have the ability to block them. This means that you won’t see their messages anymore and they will not be able to private message you.
How To Block Someone In Twitch Chat
If you don’t want to see messages from someone in chat anymore you can block them. To do this click on their name in chat. A menu will pop up. If you click on the 3 dots on the right hand side you will have the option to block the user.
Once you click on block you will be asked to confirm you want block them. Click on “Block” again.
You can also block them by using the command /block Username in chat. When you successfully block someone with the command you will see the message below.
How To Unblock Someone on Twitch
To unblock someone on Twitch you can use the Unblock command in chat. To do this type /unblock Username in chat. This will unblock them meaning you can see their messages again.
