When it comes to convenience and reliability, or goodwill among their user base, few online groups chatting platforms even come close to Discord. However, that does not exempt it from suffering bugs and issues similar to those experienced by other competing sites or apps.

The “No Route” prompt is one such error, which happens when Discord’s client has issues successfully connecting to a voice channel. This can be because of problems caused by either user settings on their network or, less commonly, by an issue on Discord’s end.

What Causes The No Route Error?

If you’re being faced with a “No Route” error while using Discord, then it’s best to understand the reason for the issue before heading to the fixes. The “No Route” prompt is commonly caused by a connection to a faulty server or complications arising from the use of VPNs.

It could also be that your firewall could be blocking Discord’s connection to an external server, or you could possibly be experiencing a varying IP address.

Nevertheless, with the possible core of the problem in mind, the next step is to try out fixes for each of the issues mentioned above.

Solving The No Route Error

Here are some possible fixes to the no-route error, sorted for your ease by the least to most technical:

Disable Your VPN

Discord can sometimes have issues establishing and maintaining its connection when the user has a VPN enabled. A VPN bounces your connection to a different server somewhere in the world before routing back to your network, so it is easy to see how VPNs can sometimes cause problems with your network connection that can lead to the no route error.

Though this is not always the case as certain premium VPNs account and accommodate for this, it is still worth checking to disable whichever VPN you’re using to see if that’s helped fix the error.

Switch Your Discord Client

Switching your discord client from the mobile/desktop app to the browser can, in some cases, solve this error. This would be because your app could have problems with its core files.

To check if this is the case, do the same action that caused the error on the app client instead on the browser client, or vice versa, and take note of whether you’re still getting the error or not. If you aren’t, then the problem was probably in the app or browser you were using and you should consider reinstalling it to fix and patch the issue.

Reboot/Reset Your Hardware

Turning hardware off and on again is a fixing method as old as time, and it applies here as well. If you face the no route error on discord, restarting your device and resetting your internet modem can potentially fix the issue.

You can further check your modem’s wiring or your PC’s internal networking hardware to ensure everything’s working and up-to-code on the hardware side.

Switch Server/Region Of Discord Voice Chat

Discord has a feature where it automatically chooses the best performing server and connects your voice channel to it. However, this automatic system can sometimes result in complications. Fortunately, you can change the server your voice channel uses, which will subsequently change it for all users inside your server.

  • Launch Discord and go to the voice channel you are experiencing issues in, and press the gear icon
  • Once in the “Overview” drawer, scroll down the page to the “Region Override Section”
  • Open the drop-down menu and manually set a new voice server

While it is recommended that you choose the server closest to you as proximity in many cases makes the connection more stable and rapid, we would also advise you to experiment around to see which one works the best, and more importantly doesn’t give you the no route error.

Disable Quality Of Service

Discord utilizes quality of service, which, without getting into the weeds of it, is a service that voice applications use to ensure better quality and reduce lag.

However, many applications have trouble supporting this, and Discord, at times is no exception. With this in mind, disabling the quality of service settings in discord is an effective counter to the no route error.

  • Open Discord and click on the cog for User Settings (near the bottom left on the desktop)
  • Navigate to the “Voice and Video” drawer
  • Check to see or make sure that the “Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority” is disabled

Renew Your IP Address

The no route error on Discord is caused by varying IP addresses. This is a unique address that gets assigned to your device by your internet service provider and helps it connect to the network or gain access online. Manually renewing it in the command prompt can help stop you from having varying IP addresses, and in turn, help avoid the no route error.

This can sound very technical and risky but is relatively simple and risk-free in practice and, in many cases, is a critical approach to getting past the no-route error on Discord.

  • Go to the Start menu and search for the “Command Prompt”
  • Once in the command menu type and enter the command “ipconfig /release.” This command will effectively release the IP address that was previously assigned to you.
  • To then assign a new IP address, type in and enter the command “ipconfig /renew.” The assignment will be automatic and your IP address will have been renewed.

Allow Discord To Bypass Your Firewall

This is another one of the solutions that users might need to employ. Your firewall could be blocking or at least partially blocking Discord’s connection to the internet, causing the no route error.

Most third-party firewalls allow you to change the permissions granted to any app in its settings but assuming for now that you’re using Windows’ built-in firewall defender, we’ll list the method to toggle this for discord below.

  • Make sure Discord is closed before going to the start menu to open the “Control Panel”
  • Move over to the search bar to help find and select “Windows Defender Firewall”
  • From the bar on the left, click “Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall”
  • Click on “Change settings” which will require administrator access
  • Now navigate through the list below and find Discord. Once you do, check both boxes labeled public and private. After doing this, select Discord from the list and delete it.
  • Click Ok.

Note that if you test to see whether the issue is fixed but are shown a prompt by Windows Defender Firewall to provide it access to Discord, ignore it.

Change Your DNS Server

Your DNS server is what is used to get access to websites over a network by accessing that website’s IP address. Your DNS server might not be working as intended which could be causing the issue.

You can mend this by switching your current DNS server to Google’s. We will show you how to do this on Windows:

  • Go to the start menu and navigate to the settings
  • Click the Network and Internet option
  • From here, select the Change adapter options setting
  • Here, you will be shown various networks that you are connected to, from which you must find and right-click your Wifi or Ethernet network and go to Properties
  • In this menu, you will need to look for the Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) option and double-click it
  • In the IP Address properties window, change the default DNS to Google’s public DNS address: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  • Press Ok and restart your computer before checking whether the issue has been fixed
