Games are getting more and more expensive every single year. I remember purchasing games for about half of what they cost today. There’s nothing worse than impulse purchasing a game only to realise you don’t even really want to play it or it’s completely different to what you thought.

So, if you have made the mistake of purchasing a game that you don’t actually like or couldn’t really afford, can you get a refund for it on the Nintendo Switch eShop?

Let’s jump in and find out how to get a refund on the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Does The Nintendo eShop Have A Refund Policy?

Can I get a refund from the Nintendo Switch eShop? Officially, Nintendo state that there will be no refunds from the eShop on their website. They state that if you have mistakenly purchased a game or purchased a wrong game there will be no refunds. Below is what their refund policy states.

We are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases, and/or if you don’t like the game. Also, when you purchase digital content in Nintendo eShop, at the time of your purchase, you consent to Nintendo beginning with the performance of its obligations immediately, before the cancellation period ends, and you acknowledge that you will thereby lose your right to cancel at that point.” – Nintendo

While this may seem like a dead end other users have reported having better luck when calling customer support.

How To Get A Refund On Nintendo eShop

Some users have reported that calling Nintendo support may in fact get you a refund even though their policy states otherwise. Apparently, Nintendo has an internal policy allowing refunds for up to 48 hours after purchase. If you are outside of this window you are probably out of luck.

When calling Nintendo support be polite and explain your situation especially if you have accidentally purchased something. You are also more likely to get a refund if you have very little play time in the game vs someone who has played 20 hours and is now looking for a refund.

Make sure to only ring customer support and ask for a refund if you really need it. Nintendo owners speculate that this refund policy is a one-off. If you repeatedly start asking for refunds in a short space of time you are likely to be denied as you are taking advantage of their policy.

Will Nintendo Provide Refunds In The Future?

While some people may be able to get refunds from Nintendo going through this process they don’t make it easy and they seemingly don’t want to support their customers on this.

However, recently in a lawsuit filed in Germany, Nintendo was accused of not following European refund laws for pre-ordered games. This could potentially lead to Nintendo becoming more forgiving on refunds.

Companies such as Steam and Battle.net make it easy to get a refund for the game as long as you haven’t played it for an extended period of time. We here at Get On Stream believe that is a much fairer policy for gamers.

Hopefully, Nintendo can take a more customer-centric approach in the future.

Wrapping Up

So, while Nintendo’s official refund policy states that they do not offer refunds, you may actually be able to get one. Only use this service if you genuinely do need a refund or have made a mistake purchasing a game. As we stated if you try to abuse this system Nintendo will likely deny your requests and potentially ban your account.
