Over the past few hours we have been receiving information on Twitch potentially being hacked. The leaker has leaked information from Twitch which reveals creator payouts, a potential steam competitor from Amazon Game Studios and the sites source code.
The information was originally posted on the 4Chan messaging board. The post released a 125GB torrent file which they claim may contain the entirety of Twitch and its commit history.
Below is what was included in the leak according to the original post:
- Streamer Payouts over 3 years
- Entirety of Twitch.tv with commit history going back to it’s early beginnings
- Mobile, desktop and video game console Twitch clients
- Various proprietary SDKs and internal AWS services used by Twitch
- Every other property that Twitch owns including IGDB and CurseForge
- An Unreleased steam competitor from Amazon Game Studios
- Twitch SOC internal red teaming tools
It states in the leak that this is part one which leads us to believe that their may be more to come. Twitch is aware of the leak but they are yet to address their user base.
Currently it looks like the leak does not contain sensitive information like passwords or information such as addresses or phone numbers however this information may also have been acquired in the hack.
The poster states that the leak is designed to “foster more disruption and competition in the online video streaming space”. There was speculation around the legitimacy of the leak initially however it has been confirmed by The Verge that the “leak is legitimate and includes code that is as recent as this week.”
As the leaker seems to be focusing on levelling the playing field for other streaming competitors we hope that no passwords or personal information will be released. However we would highly recommend changing your passwords on Twitch, enabling 2 factor authentication as well as resetting your stream key just in case more information is released.
It’s worth noting that changing your password will automatically change your stream key.
To change your stream key take the following steps:
