The PS4 targets 1080p at 30 FPS. The console is pretty dated keeping in mind that it was released back in 2013 and plenty of newer consoles have been released since then. So what graphics card is equivalent to the PS4? In this article, we are going to go over just that.

What graphics card is comparable to the PS4? To get PS4 quality graphics and performance the GTX 1050 has a similar level of power however this is now an outdated graphics card in 2022. We would recommend going with something like a GTX 1650 or AMD RX 570 which has newer architecture and can support newer titles.

Let’s jump in and take a look in more detail.

What is the Equivalent GPU for PS4?

The PS4 GPU is roughly equivalent to the Nvidia GTX 750 Ti or AMD Radeon 7850. While these are similar on paper, things are different when it comes to actual performance.

Comparing a PS4 to a PC graphics card is not fair. The GPU inside the console is custom-built for it and the games that are released for the hardware are optimized according to the power of the hardware. That is not the case for PC as there are plenty of different CPUs and GPUs and the combinations are infinite.

Teraflop to Teraflop Performance Comparison

The base PS4 has 1.84 Teraflops of throughput. The same goes for the slim version of the console. The Nvidia GTX 750 Ti has 1.4 Teraflops throughput and the AMD Radeon 7850 has a throughput of 1.7 Teraflops. The performance is very similar on paper but the actual performance can vary from game to game.

The Nvidia GTX 1050 2GB variant offers 1.8 Teraflops of throughput while the GTX 1650 features 6 Teraflops. The AMD RX 570 4GB variant has 5.1 Teraflops of computing power. These new graphics cards come with newer architectures and support a wide variety of features that the older GTX 750 Ti and Radeon 7850 do not support.

As consoles have specific hardware, it is easier for the developers of games to optimize their games according to the hardware. Things are different for PCs as they have all kinds of CPUs and graphics cards. This makes optimization tricky. Most of the time optimization is not even close and the games are not able to take advantage of the full power that the hardware has to offer. Not to mention that a PCs job is not only gaming but it has other functions running in the background as well that take up resources.

Real-World Performance Comparison

The PS4 targets 1080p resolution but most of the games are locked at 30 FPS. Both the Nvidia GTX 750 Ti and AMD Radeon 7850  are able to run competitive titles at 1080p 60 FPS at low to medium settings. If you want to run graphics-intensive games then you will need better hardware.

While frame pacing and other tricks are used to optimize games for consoles and make them feel smoother, you can get 60 FPS on PC if you have the right hardware. This is going to give you a much better and smooth gaming experience as compared to locked 30 FPS.

Recommend Graphics Cards

Both the Nvidia GTX 750 Ti and AMD Radeon 7850 are very old graphics cards. That is why we recommend getting an Nvidia GTX 1050 or the newer GTX 1650. On the AMD side of things, you can opt to go with the RX 570. All of these graphics cards are going to give you better performance than the PS4 and will be able to run games at 1080p 60 FPS at relatively high settings.

Do note that the pricing of graphics cards is all over the place right now and getting one at MSRP is tricky. We do not recommend buying graphics cards at double or triple the MSRP.

MSI Gaming X GTX 1650

The MSI Gaming X GTX 1650 is a sleek-looking graphics card that has a very nice design and a pair of fans to keep it cool. It comes with 4GB of GDDR5 memory and 896 CUDA cores. The graphics card can boost to 1860 MHz. For video output, you get a single HDMI 2.0b port and a pair of DP1.4a ports.

Zotac GeForce GTX 1050 Mini

This is a very compact graphics card that comes with a single fan and fits into pretty much any case. The graphics card has 640 CUDA cores, 2GB GDDR5 memory and can boost to 1455 MHz.

For video output, you get a single DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0b, and DL-DVI. As this is a budget graphics card, you do not get RGB lighting or a backplate but it can run pretty much any game at 1080p 60 FPS at relatively high settings.

Gigabyte RX 570 GAMING 4G

On the AMD side, we can recommend the Gigabyte RX 570 GAMING 4G. The card comes with dual fans to keep the temperature in check and a boost clock speed of 1255MHz. The graphics card comes in a black and orange color scheme which looks pretty good keeping in mind that this is a mid-range graphics card.

Unlike some other cards in this category, this one comes with a backplate and RGB lighting support. It features 2048 stream processors and for video output, you get a single HDMI 2.0b port and 3 DP 1.4 ports.

These are the graphics cards that we recommend for a better experience than what the PS4 has to offer.

Wrapping Up

On paper the Nvidia GTX 750 Ti or AMD Radeon 7850 are equivalent to the playstation 4 however to get the same real world performance we would recommend picking up something like a GTX 1650.
