If you are starting to stream on Twitch and know that you occasionally curse or swear in your daily vocabulary, you may be worried about getting a ban. Twitch has a fairly young demographic so you may be wondering what the rules are for swearing or cursing.

In this article, we are going to take a look at whether or not you are allowed to curse on Twitch? Even if you are allowed should you do it? Let’s jump in and take a look!

Can You Curse On Twitch?

Yes, you are allowed to curse on Twitch. While you are allowed to curse, you are not allowed to direct hate towards other people on the platform including other streamers and your viewers. As long as your swearing is not directed at anybody in particular you will be okay. If you swear regularly you should mark your stream as “For Mature Audiences”.

So, if you have let a swear word slip out and have scrambled to this article worrying about getting banned you don’t need to worry. Your channel will be just fine.

If you have said something bad about someone or harassed someone then you may be in a different position. First the clip of you saying something would likely have to be reported before anyone at Twitch saw it. Once it has been reported, someone at Twitch will review the clip and decide whether or not you should be punished. Twitch are mainly looking for harassment or aiming your swearing at someone before they take action.

Should You Avoid Swearing On Twitch?

There are both pros and cons to swearing on Twitch. Ultimately I can’t tell you what to do and it should come down to your personal preference. I will however outline some of the benefits and drawbacks that come with it.

Benefit Of Cursing On Twitch

If you naturally curse in your day-to-day language and that is your personality, I would recommend just being yourself. While some people play a character on Twitch that can get taxing and feel much more like a job. If you have to get up every day and self-censor yourself, you may burn out much quicker than if you were genuine on stream. Chances are your audience will find you much more real and relatable if you just be yourself anyway.

Negative Of Cursing On Twitch

The downside of cursing on Twitch is that you may alienate a portion of the potential audience as well as rule out some sponsors. The reason Ninja was able to become so big was that he stayed “family-friendly”. Parents of children knew that they could let their kids sit down and watch ninja without him swearing or saying anything not family-friendly.

Brands feel more comfortable working with people who have a family-friendly stream. Of course, they don’t want their brand to be involved in anything controversial. Swearing on stream doesn’t completely rule you out from brand deals but not swearing will open the doors to working with more brands.

How To Mark Your Stream For Mature Audiences

Now when a viewer clicks on your stream, they will be presented with a screen asking them to confirm that they want to watch mature content. This means that anyone watching your stream knows what they are getting themself into.

What Does Mature Content Mean On Twitch?

Just because you have enabled the Mature content toggle on your channel, does not mean that you can get away with anything on your channel. There are still boundaries that you cannot cross. First off, you should read the Twitch Community guidelines. This breaks down what you can and can’t do on Twitch.

Even with the mature content toggle enabled, Twitch states that you must not broadcast sexual activity, nudity, threats or extreme violence. This would result in the immediate termination of your account.

We recommend looking at our full list of banned words on Twitch to ensure you do not violate any of Twitch terms.

Can You Use Curse Words In Your Titles On Twitch?

There are certain words that you are unable to add to your Title. These words will be met with a warning if you try to create a title including them. There is no explicit list of words available but you will see a message when you try to input them.

Some swear words do work in the title but we do not recommend it. It makes your stream look unprofessional and childish. There are plenty of other titles you can come up with without having to add a curse word.

There are some occasions when it may be okay if the word is allowed by Twitch. I will leave that up to your discretion.

Will Cursing Get Me Banned On Twitch?

Cursing alone on Twitch will not get you banned. If you do direct curse words at someone else in the Twitch community or your chat you may find that you get a ban. Twitch don’t tolerate harassment on their platform.
