Modern Warfare 2 is here and it has a completely revamped perk system. Unlike the previous Call Of Duty games where you had a three-tier system, then pick 10 and now we have another brand new system in MW2.
In this article, we are going to take a look at how the new system works as well as all of the new perks in MW2.
How The Modern Warfare 2 Perk System Works
In Modern Warfare 2 you can have up to 4 perks at a time. This is made up of your Two Base perks, a Bonus Perk and an Ultimate Perk. You start the game with your two base perks and earn your bonus and ultimate perks as your earn score throughout the game.
Your bonus perk is earned 4 minutes into the game and your ultimate perk is earned 8 minutes into the game. You can reduce the time it takes to get these perks by earning score. For every 10 points of score you earn, you will shave 1 second off your timer.
This means the better you do at the start of the game, the faster you will receive these perks making you even stronger.
When you go to create a class you will see your “perk packages”. Here there are default perk packages set up for different playstyles and classes. This consists of:
- Assault
- Phantom
- Hunter
- Deadeye
- Support
- Sniper
If you want you can choose one of these default perk packages to get started or you can simply create your own custom perk package with the perks you want.
All Modern Warfare 2 Perks
Below we have outlined all Modern Warfare 2 perks and their abilities.
MW2 Base Perks
Base perks are equipped at the start of every game. You can choose two of the seven perks available for your class.
Overkill | Carry two primary weapons. |
Double Time | Double the duration of Tactical Sprint. Increase crouch movement speed by 30%. |
Battle Hardened | Reduce the effect of enemy Flash, Stun, EMP, Gas Grenade, and Shock Sticks. Immune to Snapshot Grenades. |
Scavenger | Resupply ammo and throwing knives from dead players. |
E.O.D | Take reduced damage from non-Killstreak explosives. Reset fuze timers when picking up live grenades. |
Tracker | Enemies leave behind a footprint trail, and enemy death markers are visible. Kill markers are hidden from the enemy team. |
Strong Arm | See a preview of the trajectory for thrown equipment. |
Extra Tactical | Spawn with one additional Tactical. |
Best Base Perks In MW2
The best perks will depend on the style of class you are playing.
Rushing – If you like to run and gun then Double Time and Tracker will be the best perks to equip for your base perks.
Camping – If you play more tactically then you may want to opt for E.O.D and Battle Hardened allowing you to minimize damage from equipment if you are holding down an area.
MW2 Bonus Perks
There are 6 bonus perks to choose from in Modern Warfare 2. You can choose one which will be awarded during the game. You will be awarded your bonus perk 4 minutes into the game. For every 10 points of score you earn that timer will be reduced by 1 second.
Resupply | Spawn with an additional Lethal. Equipment recharges over 25 seconds. |
Spotter | Spot enemy equipment, Field Upgrades, and Killstreaks through walls. Aiming down sights highlights them for the team. Hack enemy Claymores, Proximity Mines, C4, and Trophy Systems. |
Cold-Blooded | Undetectable by AI targeting systems, and thermal optics. Does not trigger High Alert warning. Does not highlight in enemy Tactical Cameras, Recon Drones, and Spotter Scopes. |
Fast Hands | Reload, use equipment, and swap weapons faster. |
Quick Fix | Killing players immediately triggers health regeneration. Capturing and holding objectives increases health regeneration rate. |
Focus | Reduce flinch when aiming down sights and extend Hold Breath duration. |
Best Bonus Perks In MW2
Rushing – If you have a fast-paced play style then I would recommend using Fast Hands allowing you to reload faster.
Camping – For a more passive style of play I would recommend using cold blooded allowing you to stay of enemy AI Targeting systems and other equipment.
MW2 Ultimate Perks
There are also 6 Ultimate perks available. You can choose one Ultimate perk which is awarded 8 minutes into your game. Again, by getting score you can reduce the timer by 1 second for every 10 points of score you earn.
High Alert | Vision pulses when spotted by an enemy player outside of view. |
Ghost | Undetectable by UAVs, Portable Radars, and Heartbeat Sensors. |
Hardline | Reduce Killstreak cost by one (1) kill. Reduce Scorestreak cost by 125. |
Overclock | Store an additional Field Upgrade charge. Increase Field Upgrade charge rate by 40% ON-EARN: Get a Field Upgrade Charge. |
Survivor | On death, enter Last Stand with the ability to self-revive once per life. Teammates can revive downed players faster. |
Bird’s-Eye | The minimap is zoomed out. UAV and Radar pings reveal the enemy’s direction. ON-EARN: Ping enemies on the minimap. |
Best Ultimate Perk In MW2
Rushing – For a rushing class I like to use high alert. This allows you to see when an enemy spots you which is extremely valuable information.
Camping – When playing more passively I like to use Ghost to stay off the mini-map.
How To Customize Your Perk Package In MW2
When you first jump into Create a Class you may be fooled into thinking you can only use the preset perk packages already in the game, but this is not the case. You can set up your own customized perk package.
- Enter your Custom Loadout
- Navigate to perks
- Select the plus icon on the left-hand side
- Select your custom base, bonus and ultimate perks
You have now successfully created your own custom perk package.
Our Thoughts On The New Perk System
Personally, I would prefer the pick 10 system or the 3 perk system that we used to have. Maybe over time, this system will grow on me but I don’t understand the point of earning your perks throughout the game rather than upfront.
The other problem is that when you join a game in progress other players already have their perks while you are unlikely going to be able to earn yours before the game ends.
It would also be nice to see the addition of specialist in a future update so we can have more than 4 perks at once in a game.
Wrapping Up
So there you have it. That’s everything you need to know about the Modern Warfare 2 Perks system. Let us know over on Twitter whether or not you prefer this to the old system.
